It seems that Lum appointed himself Abner's legal adviser to negotiate the best possible settlement with Ira Hodgkins for his prize bull, which was killed accidentally by Robert the Robot. Ira however, preferred to deal with Abner, and when Lum refused to allow this, their peaceful discussion ended with Ira planning to sue Abner...
