It is 10.30 on a night late in August 1940. In a South West Texas town named El Corso the streets of the Mexican section are dark and quiet. A man stands smoking a cigarette in the doorway on one of the darker streets. When he hears steps approaching he throws his cigarette away. A man asks him if he knows the Gomez family who live at number 624, but there is no 624 and the man simply wanted to get near him to rob him. In the ensuing struggle he sticks the man with a knife and then runs away, and threatens a woman with the knife into walking out on to the street with him so he can get away.
