In the reign of Louis XI Paris was besieged by the armies of the Duke of Burgundy. Throughout the long winter its inhabitants shut off from the outside world faced either starvation or slaughter, honest men turned thief, thief turned killer and in these dark tumultuous times like a rare jewel fallen in to the gutter claimed the genius of a poet, Francois Villon.
