The story opens on a bitter, cold afternoon in 1944 at a farmhouse in Fort Vermilion, a fur trading post in the northern wilds of Alberta, Canada, close to the border of the North West Territory. Słówka is a young girl whose family are originally from the Ukraine, now living in northern Canada. She came to Delaware in the United States and won a contest about the importance of American democracy!
