When she was a child Miss Sarah Paynton was very plain and the boys had to be bribed or threatened to dance with her and now as an adult she was still one of the people that everyone sees every day but nobody pays any attention to. Then about a year and a half a go she inherited quite a bit of money and now she believes that she is going to be murdered. But she didn’t care as for the past year she had had the best time of her life and she wanted to pay Philo Vance not to investigate her murder if she is killed. She didn’t want her killer caught. This was the strangest proposition Philo Vance had ever had made to him.
