The time of the play is the Fall of 1775 through 1776 during the darkest days of the American war for independence when the cause of liberty seemed lost. Philadelphia was in the hands of the enemy. Bitterly, Thomas Paine again took the long road off of Philadelphia searching for a shattered army and in the winter he found them freezing to death at Valley Forge.
