Travel used to be the privilege of the very wealthy. If you were poor, you stayed put. If you were rich, the 'in' thing was to head for Europe, where you might absorb a bit of culture. Today, as befits these democratic times, it appears that everybody seems to be going somewhere. An endless number of travel agencies put together grand tours to allow ordinary folk to savor the glory that was Greece, and the grandeur that was Rome. At the height of the season, it is said that there are more Americans in Italy than Italians!
