George Valentine is sent for by the widow of a well-known architect to help her dispose of a ghost that isn’t a ghost. He can see nothing supernatural in the face at the window, the disappearing portrait or the crude balm. Someone is obviously trying to frighten his client out of this strange house, which is surrounded by a moat. Later George Valentine suspects that Amanda Grey has solve this case her self by shooting a nocturnal prowler in her room.
