William Archer a prominent British critic accepted as a challenge the comment of a disgruntled playwright who said, "you have a lot to say about other peoples plays though I notice you haven't written one yourself. " So in order to prove he could write a play William Archer sat down and wrote The Green Goddess, which has been described as a perfectly constructed melodrama.
