Mr Chipping was a steady old-fashioned teacher at Brookfield boys’ school who each year took his vacation in the same town of Harrogate. After nineteen years in his teaching career he still had not been promoted to housemaster. This year he decides to change his holiday routine and goes to Switzerland where he meets the beautiful adventurous Katherine on top of a mountain. They dance in Vienna and fall in love and he takes her back to Brookfield as his wife. His fellow teachers are enchanted by her and the confidence she instils in her “Chips” soon make him popular among his colleges and students alike.
