Last Saturday two United States army soldiers were murdered while driving a supply wagon from Dodge town to Fort Dodge and the government payroll was stolen and Major Hurst is concerned that Marshall Matt Dillon has taken no interest in the matter. The Marshall tells him that protecting the army is not his job. The Major tells him that no one not even the two murdered soldiers knew that the payroll was in the wagon but someone found out. The Major accuses Matt of not being able to control the Dodge town ruffians and tells him that if the perpetrators are not caught within a week that the army will enforce martial law on the town.
