Philip Marlowe received a call from Sergeant Mathews regarding a brunette named Helen Lawton. Marlowe made out with Helen and sometimes still does though he hadn’t seen her for about a month. When he asked Mathews if she was in some kind of trouble he replied, “Not now, at about five o’clock this afternoon somebody put a bullet in her neck”.
