In the old brownstone house on 35th Street, there is a knock at the door, it is a beautiful, frightened redheaded girl called Mary Dunning. She is the secretary of Donald Stevens, the executive director, at the Toliver Ecological Foundation. Her boss has been missing for three days and she is extremely worried. She wants Nero Wolfe to help her find him but he has refused as he is convinced that she is lying about something.
