If you were to say to John Adams, "you can't tell the players without a score card", naturally this great American wouldn't know what you mean. But if somehow you could explain it, he would fix you with that level steadfast look of his and say that "you couldn't tell the players with a score card". Here was John Adams in 1784, getting more flak from our recent French ally than from our former English enemy. Here he was, ambassador to Paris, from the United States, and nobody really quite knew just what the United States was, or were. In addition, the rented chateau he and his wife Abigail were residing in was haunted!
