Leadville was on the western rim of the tomahawk basin. The main street was lined with cafes and on a Saturday night all the cowboys from the surrounding country came in to town to celebrate. The townspeople were used to fights and gunplay and on the night the tomahawk trail crew returned from Pottsville the violence reached a new high.
