Melting snow and floodwaters swept over several communities near the army post of Northfield. After the flood had subsided the government sent food and supplies for distribution to those in need. Lieutenant Calhoun was in charge of the post in the absence of Captain Curtis. He saw a chance to make some money with the aid of a civilian partner Squint Mirkle.
