A cavalry troop led by Captain Fletcher had halted just short of a pass leading into the rugged saw-tooth hills. The men had dismounted, set up the three field pieces they had brought with them, and were now firing steadily at the pass, whose rocky formation made a natural fortress. Those not occupied with the cannon kept up a deadly barrage of rifle fire, and in the midst of this activity Private Tom Cole approached his commanding officer to question whether there might be a danger they might hit the womenfolk with the redskins tribe - since his wife was one of them...
