At the close of the civil war government troops were sent to the Western Ynited States to put down the Indian uprisings and protect the honest settlers from the bands of outlaws that roamed the new territory. But the officers and youngmen were untrained in frontier warfare and their task might have proved too much for them if it had not been for the masked rider of the plains.
