Lieutenant Buckley is forced by his cousin to watch the killing of a traitor blindfolded against a wall by the firing squad during war torn France. It was to show him the sort of woman he was in love with in Paris. The man who had just been shot had been one of her lovers and he was not her only lover who had faced the firing squad. Steven Buckley is allowed to go to Paris but is instructed not to liases with the Coudrae woman. Vera Coudrae is under strong suspicion of being a German Spy, a clever woman who evades suspicion by seemingly enslaving her lovers who then suffer the blame.
