Having rescued Jeanette Burton from the chamber of serpents Wong-Tai has forced her against her will to accompany him to the subterranean treasure vault of Ahtea, white queen of Tohr. Lead by the Shan of Ratohr and Paul D’Arnot the Ratohrean army moving rapidly through the jungle toward the walled city of Tohr is joined a short distance from their goal by Ukar who reports the death of Temur and Pultar.

Meanwhile following the killing of Mungo by Tarzan, Oruk, Kyluk and the ape-man have stealthily emptied the dual pits in the cover of darkness in an attempt to free the pit slaves and lead them in an attack upon the palace.
