This is the story of two young American farmers, and how they used innovative, new farming methods to successfully run a farm in Pennsylvania. The tale begins with young Walt and Bill Carling as they are ambling along the lane. When old Ed Johnson pulls up alongside them and offers them some work for a few pennies, they jump at the chance - but it ends with a huge disagreement. Ed's very scornful of the boys ideas on modern farming, and tells them to take the education they're getting and use it to get them out of the farming business, because the land is no good. But the boys are determined...
