Gabriel Mannering has not seen his friend Roderick Usher in many years but after receiving a letter from him with shocking contents Mr Mannering arrives at the bleak and melancholy house of the Usher family. Roderick feels that the house they live in is a tomb; a house of death, a house that is crumbling yet that will not die. He blames the house for his twin sister Madeline’s ill health, his sister who is all but dead yet still alive, and for his own insanity.
