While at the building Lott inspecting the cement foundations with Abner Lum is approached by Ernie Duncan, an ex-serviceman looking to buy a house for him and his wife. Somehow Lum agrees to build a house for him and accepts a $250 deposit. With that and the money he maid on the contests he has just enough to pay for the piano.
