A few minutes ago, Mary waved goodbye to Max, as Sheriff Boscoe drove away with him to take him before the grand jury. She had to walk away through a jeering crowd of townspeople - some accusing her of being in league with Max and the gambling racket, and other condemning her loyalty to him. Mary registered no notice, and instead of going home, she went to Dr Benson's clinic, where she has just encountered Nurse Miller in the corridor.
