With Max committed to jail for a year and a day, Gerald Pruss lost no time trying to gain control of his share in the Sanders interest. Mary, saving Max's control for him until he is a free man, refuses to sell out to Pruss at any price. He has called Mr Barton - an industrialist who is building a factory in town - and who previously befriended Max and Mary, to convince him to isolate them.
