Max Tilley is on trial for the killing of Benjamin Carter. Mary, Max, the lawyers, friends and enemies crowd the court room to overflowing. It's a tense day, and a sad day for Mary and Max, but for the people of the town, and the reporters, the excitement of the whole affair has turned it into somewhat of a gala occasion.
