It was a most pathetic scene in Max's cell that closed our situation yesterday. Mary had literally dragged herself there from her sick bed to see Max, but what was more disturbing than Max's apparent despair at what he had done, was the shift in the attitude of the townspeople - many of them who the day before had hailed Max as he came down the street.
