Jim Ashley was a tall raw bone man in his late twenties; his deeply sunburned face bore a grave expression. There were small wrinkles at the edge of his gray eyes, wrinkles that had once been laugh lines but Jim hadn’t laughed much in the last two years. Certainly not since he’d brought his wife and child out to live in this sun-baked desert of Elkhorn Flats.
