The legislature was about to choose a permanent state capital. The temporary capital hoped to retain the honor, but unexpectedly, vigorous opposition developed from the supporters of Dundee. When the legislature convened, the conflict between the two groups intensified. Mass meetings were held, arguments ripened into quarrels, and at the time our story opens, a parade bidding for attention is taking place down the main street.
