Multi millionaire and wolf Maurice Clinton hires private detective Richard Diamond to find Elaine Tanner. When he goes to her last known apartment he is fired at by someone with a gun. He doesn't have much to go on in his investigation and all he knows is that Clinton wants her found but it seems someone else doesn't and will go to the extreme lengths of murder to prevent her discovery.

At the end of the story Richard Diamond (Dick Powell) sings, "All Because You Kissed Me Goodnight" while his girfriend gets ready to celebrate the end of the case.
