When Joe Bell met Mabel they fell in love. Joe didn’t want Mabel to fall in love with him, as he knew it could never work for her with a man like him. Mabel’s uncle did not agree with the union and sought Joe out to warn him off but he suddenly collapsed dead. Mabel told Joe that her uncle had a bad heart from drinking and that they had not done anything wrong and they should go to the police but Joe didn’t trust anyone except Mabel and they went on the run. They later heard it on the news that Joe was wanted for the murder of Mabel’s uncle. Mabel tried to instil it in to Joe that it was important to be honest and the truth would always out.
