The Dreyfus Affair was a political and military scandal that divided France from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. The case revolved around the arrest and conviction of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain, for treason. Dreyfus was accused of passing military secrets to the German government, but there was strong evidence that he was innocent. Nevertheless, he was convicted by a court-martial and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island.
