The story begins with Otto Frank, after the war has ended, and he is back in the Netherlands after spending several years at Auschwitz. He has made the decision to leave, and is clearing the house when his close family friend and employee Miep Gies hands him a diary written by his daughter during the family's time hidden during the Nazi occupation of the country.
