The story tonight was written nearly a century before psychotherapy was invented. If it had been the other way around, our hero might have suffered a little more, and we a little less. It is the story of Poprishchin who is in love with the daughter of a senior official and yearns to be noticed by her. He diarizes his thoughts until it eventually drives him to insanity.
