The employees of Carnes department store are beginning to punch in for the day. Among the early arrivals is Mabel Darney who hurries towards the elevator. The elevator seems to be taking sometime to arrive and Mabel wonders why the lift is not on the main floor. Upon inspection Grady, the night watchman is found dead in the basement shaft.
