In the small rough settlement of Dundee about 10 miles from Selkirk Shorty Wilkins was well known to the townsmen. Shorty and his wife Kate, a big rough pioneer type of woman had a small claim a few miles out along the trail to Selkirk. Kate ruled their little cabin and Shorty with an iron hand much to the amusement of the others in Dundee. One afternoon Shorty had ridden to town on horseback.
