It is late afternoon, and in the modernistic bedroom of her East 50s apartment, Andrea Shepherd is packing. Packing, and trying to give her sympathetic attention to her husband John, who is stretched out on the bed. He constantly torments himself with doubts about his wife's fidelity, and her being the breadwinner of the two, with her successful career. Cliff, his half-brother, has accused him of being in love with Andrea's secretary... Andrea doesn't believe it, she doesn't believe any of it. She knows her husband and she believes him to be sick.
