Arthur Brook is angry that his father has spent his inheritance of $500,000 on some antique bells from England and a famous bell ringer who he assigns to ring the bells on the hour every hour. When old man Brook's dies Arthur seeks to sell the bells but the solicitor informs him he cannot as it is written in to his father's airtight will. In rage at the constant reminder when the bells ring Arthur kills the bell ringer and from that moment on is taunted by the ringing of the bells in his mind.
