Jessie Trent had remained in the mining community known as Big Tree for three years after the death of her husband. She stayed there simply because there was nowhere else to go, and earned enough to support herself and her twelve year old son by baking bread and pies and other things to eat, which she sold in the Big Tree restaurant.
