It is September 1914 and England has declared war. Joan is fearful for her friend Gerald who is to be posted to the front line. Gerald proposes to her and they plan to marry when the war is over, as he wants her for his wife and not his widow. Whilst he is away his brother David arrives on leave and Joan and David fall in love. Gerald gives Joan her freedom to love his brother, as her happiness is what makes him happy.
