It is raining ferociously in Petersville. Britt runs over to the Jackson Hotel's front porch to take shelter. There he meets Calvin Plummer whom he had met before the last time he was in Petersville, six years ago. The month before, Calvin's mother had married again, only ten months after becoming a widow. Calvin is very bitter about this, he thinks that his mother is being swindled.
