In September of 1900 Holmes and Watson went to Eastbourne for a short holiday. Here they met a friend of Holmes' who was curator at a local museum. He introduces them to a Lady Clavering who's husband walked out on her a few years previously and has not been seen since. Now she wishes to marry again but can't prove that her husband is dead. Whilst out walking later that day they visit the local lime pits and have a stormy meeting with the missing Lord Clavering's brother.
