Dr Watson describes this story as one of the most touch and go, hair-raising adventures it was ever his privilege to share with the sage of Baker Street, Mr Sherlock Holmes. The 30th January is the anniversary of the beheading of King Charles the First which is why the Duke of Buckinghusrt was dressed in Scottish highland regalia when he called upon Sherlock Holmes for his help. He came with a letter, the contents of which were of great interest. It read. "To the late Duke of Buckinghurst, beware the blade of the martyr king"... Interesting but brief. The duke thinks that the expression the blade of the martyr king is referring to the ancient superstition which concerns the sword in the statues of King Charles' hand. It states that if anyone dare to plot against the crown henceforth let him beware that sword. It is said that when a traitor to the crown approaches the statue the sword trembles and cries out for vengeance. As Lord Buckinghurst was due to lay a reef on the pedestal of statue for the anniversary celebrations it seems that someone may be planning to see him decapitated by the sword.
