There are three main characters in this story. One of them is a psychiatrist, a man whose purpose it is to heal and cure but the other two’s intentions are not nearly so benevolent. Jimmy French is a con man who seduces Mattie Sheridan who works for his psychiatrist, Dr Cooper. He flatters her in to believing he wants to marry her but he uses her to steal her boss's files so that he can blackmail the patients after she convinces herself that true love is more important than truth.
