France in the early years of the seventeenth century was the last stronghold of ancient futilism. The country was divided in to vast domains ruled over by independent lords. Then in 1638 Luis the 13th began to gain authority over his nobles, a rise of power brought about by the strength and purpose of one man, a minister of state whose name was on everyone’s lips, Cardinal Richelieu.
