Sam Spade has phoned his office to find his secretary Effie in distress, as she believes that Sam has committed suicide. Sam tells her “I am not dead, don’t believe everything that you read in the papers or hear on the radio”. She was about to tell him that she was at his funeral and he tells her “don’t believe that either”. He’ll be over right away more alive than ever with an account of the caper which proves you can kill some of the people part of the time - his exaggerated report on the death of Sam Spade.
