Prior to the advent of the railroad, the means of fast transportation cross country was the stage coach. From St Louis, Missouri to El Paso, Texas and through Arizona to Los Angeles, and then to San Francisco - a distance of 2795 miles, ran the Butterfield Overland Mail.
