Boy Alone

Thomas Herbert Ashley Smythe, aged ten, tried not to cry as they lowered his father's coffin into the grave. His dog, Rags, a huge Newfoundland, stood beside him, and the boy found some comfort in the great dog's shaggy coat. He had nowhere to go, and nobody to take care of him, but was given a room in the kitchen of the Deuce's Wild cafe by Steel, and in the weeks that followed, Tommy worked for Black Bart in the kitchen from long before breakfast until long after supper.
