The family home is unusually quiet this evening. Clifford is gone out, Mother Barbour is next door at Jack's house, and Father Barbour is sitting alone and rather disconsolately in the library trying to read. In his studio at the top of the house, Paul too is alone, sat at his desk writing a letter, but looks up as he hears footsteps outside his door.
