It's a cold, grey evening in Seacliff, San Francisco. Wisps of fog swirl up over the sea wall, promising a heavier fog to come. At Jack Barbour's house across the hedge from the Barbour family home, Betty goes repeatedly to the front window to gaze anxiously down the street. Jack phoned at 5:40pm to say that he was having trouble with his car, saying no more before hanging up. It's 7:45pm now, and Betty stands staring gloomily out of the window...
